  1. Researching the headline online to see if any ligit sites also had the same article.

What Is Protest?

What is protesting?
How do you protest?
Why do you protest?

If you ask a 12 year old kid what is Protest, he or she will answer either yes or no. Most will answer no, or answer differently. That’s because 30 out of %70 kids know what protest really is. So then what is protest?

Protest is an event which is caused by an error that someone disagrees with, so they fight for the rule or law to be changed. It isn’t actual fighting like a fist-fight but it’s when people march to a certain place and shout at the building and the people inside, hoping they’ll be heard. Anyone can join in as long as their fighting for the same cause. You would have possibly seen all this happen with people holding banners and signs pleading for their wishes to be met.

Protests can work, an example of this is the Parihaka protest when the maori did not fight when the pakeha invaded them, but instead offered food for the british soldiers, and the maori sent their children to greet the soldiers. This protest wasn’t respected until 2017 when they were apologised to. Another example is Kate Sheppards, how she wrote the women’s Suffrage Petition, when over 25,000 women signed it requesting they should be able to vote for government policy. New Zealand was the first country in the world to let women vote for government. Both of these protests worked and were acknowledged even to today. They were so acknowledged that on the face of a NZ $10 note, Kate Sheppard is printed onto the paper. Wow! Isn’t that cool.

I hope you have learnt more about protests and even NZ history of protesting. Now you should know probably more about protesting than me. Check out more of my blog!

De First ASSEMBLY!

I was nervous, there was no denying it. My heart was pounding, I was
to only say a few words but something was hammering my confidence.
Making it nigh impossible to speak but I slowly forced myself to speak
and think. What is this? Ever since now I have been fearless, but
something was churning inside me, of course I didn’t give anything
away, somehow my problem related to the korero we were performing,
The Little Things Matter.

I was deep in thought as a presence entered my vision and shouted at
me “Toby! Your line…” Mr Jacobsen barked at me, I was shortly
shocked then obeyed his orders. “Hey, break it up you two remember
Pt England, Be kind with your actions and words” “apologise, please”
everyone laughed “It’s the little things that matter” then ran off the
stage preparing myself for what lay next.

The real thing was much different, I had suddenly regained
confidence and presented my lines with my own style of not really
reading the exact words of a script but to do it my own way when
everyone’s not bored. I did exactly this and performed fluently. But
the worst part hadn’t come yet and I was juggling my feet, leaning on
one foot to the other, swaying slowly. Once again my mind was
concentrating on my training. Say this, say that, do this, do that my
mind was rehearsing the words and actions of the haka we were to
perform. Tika Tonu.

We were to perform this haka for our school principal as he
received an award from the Queen! And 2 year groups of year 7’s
and 8’s and a few school Teacher-aids were to recite this in front
of Mr Burts. This must be pretty big, I thought but then it’s the
Queen so why not. I heard the waiata finish and the haka began.

My Original Copy:

Assembly was great, I stood there and did stuff. What FUN!
